Good Chinese Compo Endings
Most students spend their planning time on how to start. By the time they reach the last paragraph they're watching the clock, and the composition ends with 这个故事告诉我们要努力 or something equally flat.
That's a waste, because the ending is the last thing the examiner reads before deciding a mark. A weak final paragraph pulls down a composition that was doing fine until then.
Here are five ways to finish properly, with phrases your child can adapt rather than memorise.
1. 首尾呼应: echo the opening
The strongest and most reliable technique. Whatever image or detail opened the composition comes back at the end, changed by what happened in between.
If the composition opened with rain, it closes with the rain stopping. If it opened with an empty seat at the dinner table, it closes with someone sitting in it.
It works because it makes the composition feel designed rather than merely finished. Examiners notice it immediately.
2. 景物收尾: end on a scene
Rather than stating how everyone felt, describe something in the surroundings that carries the feeling. This is the technique that separates upper-band compositions from mid-band ones at both PSLE and O-Level.
The rule is that the scene has to match the mood. A sunset closing a sad story reads as a mistake, not as irony. Children need that said explicitly.
3. 心理收尾: end inside the character's head
Close on what the character is thinking or feeling, in specific terms rather than 我很开心.
4. 对话收尾: end on a line of speech
Underused, and effective when the story has been building toward something someone needed to say.
It lets the point of the composition arrive through a character instead of through the narrator, which almost always reads better.
5. 感悟收尾: end on a realisation
This is the one students reach for first and handle worst. Done well it's strong. Done badly it's the flat moral that ruins otherwise good work.
The difference is whether the realisation belongs to the character or is announced to the reader.
Both of those sit inside the story. Compare them with 这个故事告诉我们要勇敢, which sits outside it and adds nothing.
What to cut
The single most common weak ending in Singapore compositions. It tells the examiner the student doesn't trust their own story.
Fine at P2. Not at P5 and beyond.
Summarising what just happened. The examiner read it two paragraphs ago. Repeating it wastes the strongest position in the composition.
Introducing something new. A fresh character or event in the last paragraph reads as running out of plan.
A memorised 好句 that doesn't fit. An elegant phrase bolted onto the wrong story is more obvious than a plain sentence that fits.
Primary and secondary are not the same
At primary level, one or two clean sentences are enough. 首尾呼应 and 心理收尾 are the most reliable, and a P5 or P6 student who can do those two well is covered for most prompts.
At secondary level the ending is expected to carry more. 景物收尾 and 感悟收尾 become more useful, and for argumentative or discursive writing the closing paragraph needs to widen the point rather than resolve a story.
The practical advice for either level is the same. Have two endings your child can execute cleanly under pressure, rather than five they half remember.
At Yanzi Mandarin, composition work covers structure and endings alongside vocabulary, because a strong phrase bank does nothing if the last paragraph collapses. We run classes at Katong and Bukit Timah.
If you're working on the other end of the composition, we've written separately about good Chinese compo starters, and collected useful phrases for composition.
